How VPNs and proxies affect IP lookup
A VPN or proxy routes your traffic through another network, so the public IP—and its geolocation—usually reflects the exit provider, not your home connection.
People often notice their public IP address and geolocation change after turning on a VPN or corporate proxy. That is expected: lookup tools describe the network you present to the internet, not every hop along the path.
Short answer: why VPNs change lookup results
A VPN (virtual private network) or HTTP/SOCKS proxy sends your traffic through a remote server. Websites and lookup tools then see the VPN or proxy provider’s public IP. Geolocation, ISP, and ASN fields usually describe that exit network—not your home ISP.

What does not change
- Your private LAN addresses (such as 192.168.x.x) stay on your local network; only the public exit changes.
- The fact that geolocation is approximate — VPN exit cities are still estimates, not GPS pins.
- Legal and policy boundaries — a VPN does not make IP lookup an identity tool.
Mobile carriers and corporate proxies
Similar effects appear without a consumer VPN. Mobile networks may route traffic through carrier gateways. Corporate networks may centralize outbound traffic through a security appliance. In each case, the public IP in logs reflects the exit network, which can differ from where the user is physically located.
A practical workflow for comparing results
- Check your public IP on Lokatte with VPN off; note IP, ISP, and country.
- Enable the VPN and refresh; compare which fields changed.
- If investigating logs, treat VPN/hosting ASNs as shared infrastructure—see what an ASN is.
- For many addresses, use bulk IP lookup to spot clusters under the same exit provider.
Limits and ethical use
Do not use IP lookup to harass, dox, or accuse someone based on approximate location. VPNs are one reason geolocation can disagree with real-world context; shared NAT and hosting are others. Use results for debugging, education, and legitimate support—not surveillance.

- Sites you reach through the VPN typically see the VPN exit IP. Your local ISP does not receive that site traffic directly while the VPN tunnel is active. Local network administrators on your LAN are a separate consideration.
