How it works
How does the IP lookup API work?
When you check IP details or run an IP address lookup, requests go through a first-party API route. That route validates input, forwards the visitor IP correctly in production, requests geolocation data from ip-api.com, and returns structured JSON you can read on the page or export.

Glossary

IP Address
An IP address is the public number your internet connection uses online. When you ask “what is my IP,” this page shows that public IP address so you can see what websites detect.
Internet Protocol addressing is defined by the IETF; the two common versions are IPv4 and IPv6.
IPv4
IPv4 is the classic IP format written as four numbers separated by dots, such as 8.8.8.8. If your result badge says IPv4, that is the address type being shown.
IPv4 is specified in IETF RFC 791.
IPv6
IPv6 is the newer IP format with longer hexadecimal addresses. If your result badge says IPv6, Lokatte is displaying that newer address type.
IPv6 is specified in IETF RFC 8200.
ISP
An ISP (Internet Service Provider) is the company that gives you internet access—home broadband, mobile, or hosting. The ISP field in your report names the provider linked to that IP.
ASN
An ASN (Autonomous System Number) identifies the network operator that announces an IP range on the internet. The ASN field helps you see which network owns or routes that address.
ASNs are allocated through Regional Internet Registries under IANA number-resource coordination.
Geolocation
IP geolocation is the estimated country, region, city, zip, continent, timezone, and map coordinates shown for an IP. It is approximate network location—not precise GPS—and can change with VPNs or mobile routing.
Timezone
Timezone in the report is the time zone associated with the IP’s estimated location (for example, Asia/Karachi). It helps place the geolocation result in local time context.
VPN
A VPN (Virtual Private Network) sends your traffic through another server. If a VPN is on, Lokatte usually shows the VPN exit IP and its location—not your home or office address.
Proxy
A proxy forwards your requests through another server and can change the public IP others see. Lookup results may then describe the proxy’s network instead of your local connection.
